AI accounting software

AI accounting software that keeps real books

Most accounting software added an AI sidebar. LedgerMCP went the other way: it is a real double-entry ledger built so your AI can run it. Connect Claude or ChatGPT, hand over a bank statement, and the books get done.

Your agent, any chat

Am I profitable this month?

What “AI accounting software” means today

Four things carry the label. Three of them still leave you doing the work.

AI sidebars

Old software with a chat box bolted on. The AI suggests a category; you still click every row, inside their app, on their subscription.

AI services

Human bookkeepers with AI in the pipeline. Work happens on their schedule, and the books live in their system.

Read-only wrappers

Tools that let an AI look at your books and summarize. Useful, but nothing gets done; the writing is still on you.

Agent-native (this)

The AI is a first-class user with the same capabilities you have. You review.

How it works

  1. Connect. Add LedgerMCP as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT. Sign in with a 6-digit email code. No keys to paste. (Walkthroughs: Claude, ChatGPT.)
  2. Hand over the work. Give your AI a bank statement, a CSV, or just an instruction. It imports, categorizes against your chart of accounts, flags duplicates, and matches transfers.
  3. Review. Open the web app whenever you want.

The full loop, month to month, is on the how it works page.

Why the AI cannot break your books

The safety is in the database, not in a prompt. Every journal entry must balance to the cent or the write is rejected. Postings are immutable; there is no edit and no delete, only linked reversals. Balances are always computed from postings, so reports can never drift from the ledger. Replayed requests return the original entry instead of posting twice.

That is why an AI can work unsupervised here and not in a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet accepts any mistake silently. This ledger refuses them. The complete architecture is on the security page.

Every write logged

Append-only audit log, actor recorded, one-click reverse.

Read-only mode

Issue a key that can report but never write.

Period locks

Closed months are closed, for humans and AIs alike.

Human-only deletes

Destructive actions never ship as agent tools.

Common questions

What is AI accounting software?

Software where an AI does the bookkeeping work, not just suggests it. In LedgerMCP, the AI you already use (Claude or ChatGPT) keeps the books directly, on a real double-entry ledger.

Is it safe to let an AI touch my books?

Yes, because the ledger protects itself: entries must balance or the database rejects them, nothing is ever edited or deleted, and every AI action is logged with one-click reverse.

Do I need to know accounting?

No. You talk to your AI in plain language: "categorize last month" or "how much did I spend on software?". The double-entry machinery runs underneath. Your accountant will recognize everything at tax time.

Which AI assistants work with LedgerMCP?

Claude and ChatGPT connect as connectors, and any MCP-compatible client works too, including Claude Code and desktop agents using an API key.

How is this different from QuickBooks with Intuit Assist?

Intuit Assist helps you while you work inside QuickBooks, on a paid per-company subscription. LedgerMCP hands the toolset to your own AI: their AI assists, yours operates.

How is it different from AI bookkeeping services?

Services charge $199 to $599 a month for humans working on a schedule. Here the same work happens in minutes in your own chat, and the books are yours: standard double-entry with full CSV export.

What does it cost?

The software is free: unlimited books, CSV and OFX import, all reports, and MCP access for the AI you bring. Paid plans add live bank feeds from $9 per month, and Growth ($39) and Scale ($249) include a built-in AI assistant.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol is the open standard AI assistants use to work with outside tools. LedgerMCP ships a full accounting toolset over MCP.

Can my accountant still use it?

Yes. The web app is a full accounting front end with standard reports and CSV exports of everything, and accountants who run client books on it get unlimited books free.
